LICENSE TO PURCHASE/ PISTOL PURCHASE PERMIT:

Michigan law requires the purchaser of a firearm to apply with their local Sheriff's Office prior to buying a gun from an individual or Federal Firearms Dealer. This process is also required for an individual inheriting a firearm from a deceased individual/estate. The exception to this ruling is a valid CPL holder.

To apply for a License to Purchase, you will need to visit the Sheriff's Office in person during normal business hours, Monday through Friday 8am to 4pm. Due to the amount of time the application process may take, please avoid arriving at the office after 3:30pm.

Requirements:

1. Must have a valid Michigan Driver License or State of Michigan ID with current address.
2. Must be 21 years of age to purchase from a Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) Dealer and 18 years of age to purchase from an individual.
3. Must not currently be on probation or parole with conditions prohibiting the ownership of firearms.
4. Must not have any pending criminal cases.
5. Must not have any felony convictions or certain misdemeanor (domestic violence or drug related) convictions.
6. Must not have ever been found mentally incompetent.
7. Must not have an active Personal Protection Order (PPO) prohibiting the ownership of firearms.
8. Must not meet any other State or Federal disqualification.

The application process:

The application process is fairly straightforward.

2. Fill out an application.
3. Sign the background check authorization form in front of the notary.
4. Indicate how many licenses you will need within the next 30 days.
