LAW ENFORCEMENT DIVISION

Sheriff-Rosa-300x251
The primary responsibility of the Law Enforcement Division is to provide the highest quality of public services and safety to the citizens and visitors of Benzie County.

Benzie County is situated in Northwestern Lower Michigan, covering approximately 340 square miles, consisting of 54 named lakes and numerous smaller ones, and 25 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. The Benzie County Sheriffs’ Office serves a population of 17,800. Our population grows seasonally to approximately 50,000+ during the summer tourist period, which can pose unique challenges for law enforcement.

The Benzie County Sheriff's Office is the primary provider for law enforcement services to the Benzie County community.  This agency provides the best possible protection we can with the resources provided.

Services provided by our Law Enforcement Division include patrolling the roads and highways of Benzie County, issuing citations, performing criminal investigations and arresting violators of the law.

Officer, School Resource Officer, Road Sergeant, Detective Sergeant and Undersheriff. He was elected to the Office of Sheriff for a four year term beginning January 1, 2021.  Sheriff Rosa's desire to serve comes from a long family history of first responders and military personnel.  His great- great- great grandfather, Addison P. Wheelock, was the first Sheriff of Benzie County in 1870. He grew up in Long Lake Township and graduated from Traverse City Central High School.  He went on to achieve an associates degree in applied Science/Criminal Justice and completed the Police Academy at Northwestern Michigan College in 1988.  That same year, he moved to family property in Lake Ann and became a permanent Benzie County resident.  His dedication and commitment to serve Benzie County residents is ever present by his countless hours of volunteering at community events.  He has been married for 32 years, has two adult children and seven amazing grandchildren.  Rosa has many hours of training in the field of law enforcement and is a DNR certified instructor in Marine, Snowmobile, and ATV safety.  On his days off he enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, spending time at his U.P. cabin, and ATV riding.
